Overview
For decades, biomechanical analysis has been locked inside the laboratory: force plates, marker suits, and a report that arrives days or weeks after the session it was meant to improve. For most sprint coaches, especially at club and youth level, that feedback loop is simply out of reach.
Kinepose closes that gap. A coach films a single side-on clip with a phone and uploads it. Within seconds, a multi-stage computer-vision pipeline returns an annotated video, frame-by-frame joint kinematics, spatio-temporal sprint metrics, and exportable data, with no markers, no special hardware, and no lab. The system is built around the trade-off that matters in the field: accurate enough to be trusted, fast enough to be used between repetitions, and accessible enough to run on the equipment coaches already carry.
What we built
A multi-stage pose-estimation pipeline, tuned for sprinting
- Built on established open-source computer-vision and deep-learning tools (MMPose, PyTorch, OpenCV), with custom components tuned for fast, motion-blurred sprint footage.
- Athlete detection, 2D pose estimation, 3D lifting and temporal smoothing chained together, so joint angles are stable from frame to frame and less dependent on the exact camera angle.
Joint kinematics and sprint metrics, automatically
- Joint angles: elbow, knee and hip (left and right) for every frame, overlaid on the video.
- Contact and flight: ground contact time (GCT) and flight time (FT) for each step.
- Stride mechanics: step frequency and step length.
- Speed and pacing: average speed, maximum speed and split times.
- Results exported as an annotated video, JSON and CSV with timestamps, ready for Excel, Python or coaching software, plus an archive of extracted frames for visual review.
